The laggards in the Wednesday sector: healthcare, technology and communications
THELooking at the worst sectors on Wednesday at noon, shares of healthcare companies underperform other sectors, posting a loss of 0.6%. Within that group, Moderna Inc (ticker: MRNA) and Perrigo Company plc (ticker: PRGO) are two of the day’s laggards, posting losses of 18.3% and 12.4%, respectively. Among ETF health, the ETF next to the sector is the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (ticker: XLV), which is down 0.8% on the day and up 17.14% year-to-date. Moderna Inc, meanwhile, is up 257.24% year-to-date, and Perrigo Company plc, 2.65% year-to-date. Together, MRNA and PRGO represent approximately 2.7% of the underlying holdings of XLV.
The second worst performing sector is technology and communications, up 0.4%. Among large tech and communications stocks, Applied Materials, Inc. (ticker: AMAT) and IPG Photonics Corp (ticker: IPGP) are the most notable, posting losses of 2.6% and 2.0%, respectively. . The Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) is one of the ETFs that closely tracks technology and communications stocks. Applied Materials, Inc., meanwhile, is up 56.36% year-to-date, and IPG Photonics Corp is up 22.56% year-to-date. Together, AMAT and IPGP represent approximately 1.3% of XLK’s underlying holdings.
