Latecomers in the Friday sector: healthcare, technology and communications


THELooking at the worst sectors on Friday at noon, stocks of healthcare companies underperformed other sectors, posting a loss of 0.9%. Within this group, Moderna Inc (ticker: MRNA) and Merck & Co Inc (ticker: MRK) are two large lagging stocks, posting a loss of 20.4% and 9.0%, respectively. Among ETF health, the next sector ETF is the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (ticker: XLV), which is down 1.3% on the day and up 18.09% year-to-date. Moderna Inc, meanwhile, is up 116.49% year-to-date, and Merck & Co Inc is up 8.07% year-to-date. Together, MRNA and MRK represent approximately 5.0% of the underlying holdings of XLV.

The second worst performing sector is technology and communications, up 0.2%. Among the major tech and communications stocks, Citrix Systems Inc (ticker: CTXS) and Etsy Inc (ticker: ETSY) are the most notable, posting losses of 5.2% and 3.8%, respectively. The Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK), which closely tracks technology and communications stocks, is up 0.4% at midday and 28.92% year-to-date . Citrix Systems Inc, meanwhile, is down 29.88% year-to-date and Etsy Inc is up 46.69% year-to-date. CTXS represents approximately 0.1% of the underlying holdings of XLK.
